History

From Scotland to Northwest Georgia
McLemore Cove was named before the property was established.
Settled by Cherokee tribal chief, Dragging Canoe, and his followers during the winter of 1776, McLemore Cove became an enclave for what became known as the Cherokee Chickamauga tribe.
McLemore is named in honor of John McLemore, whose father, Charles, arrived in the area from Scotland some time in the early 18th century.

Charles was reported to have married a local Cherokee princess named “Quatsy Wolf” of the Wolf Clan.

John McLemore was a minor chief of the Cherokees and also served as captain in the War of 1812.
The intersection of cultures is deeply rooted in the history of McLemore Cove.

The McLemore Mark: Folded together, the flower and the cross become a union of nature, tradition and faith. Visually, the mark contains the cross in the design’s “positive” white space, while the stylized Cherokee dogwood blossom resides in the darker “negative” space.

The Cherokee Dogwood: One of the most common ornamental trees in Georgia is the Cherokee Princess Dogwood. It is native to the eastern United States and can be found growing throughout northwest Georgia.

The McLemore Tartan: Although its spelling varied significantly throughout the centuries, the modern McLemore surname derived from the 17th century MacGillemuire and MacGhille Mhoire surnames. These names eventually evolved into what is now recognized as, and pronounced, Morrison, from which the Morrison clan and their tartan emerged. Thus, while McLemore has no official tartan, the McLemore surname is a sept, or a relative, of Morrison, making the tartan above shared by the Morrisons and the McLemores.

The Cherokee Tartan: The intersection of cultures is deeply rooted in the history of McLemore Cove. Settled by cherokee tribal cheif, Dragging Canoe, and his followers during the winter of 1776, McLemore Cove became an enclave for what became known as the Cherokee Chickamauga tribe. The marriage of Charles McLemore and Cherokee princess, Quatsy Wolf, joined the cultures of the Cherokee and Scots. Years later in 1995, the Scottish Heritage USA organization presented the tartan tot he Cherokee tribe (also known as the Cherokee Chickamauga tribe) at the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games in North Carolina.

The Bull Thistle: Indigenous to McLemore Cove, the Bull Thistle likely accompanies Charles McLemore’s steps as he explored the countryside of northwest Georgia. For any visitor or explorer from Scotland like Charles was, the thistle was a friendly reminder of home. It has been the national emblem of Scotland since the reign of King Alexander III, from 1249-1286, and appeared on silver coins issued by King James III in 1474.

The Celtic Cross: Saint Patrick, the famed fifth-century Romano-British missionary, introduced the Celtic Cross to pagan converts as a combination of the Christian cross with the pagan sun symbol to represent Christ’s supremacy over pagan worship.
